Reclaiming Historical Memories
We, as members of the Irish Transport & General Workers Union (ITGWU) have worked to obtain membership ledgers from over 100 years ago – bringing people from all walks of life, together today to celebrate our Shared History.
S.H.I.P – Our Mission
The Shared History Interpretive Project (SHIP) was established in 2006 to collect, collate and record information that will promote and inform heritage projects, encouraging the development of a shared history. Our project explores the rich history of Belfast dockworkers, their families, the port in general and its connected industries, small businesses, trade unions and communities.
We continue to expand our collection of banners, books, photographs and documentation which depicts this social and industrial history and is exhibited publicly at many events that we organise. The SHIP educational mural measuring 32 feet x 12 feet can be viewed any time, it is situated on the gable wall of the Dockers Amateur Boxing Club in Pilot Street. SHIP organise various activities that bring together people of all backgrounds and have established partnerships with organisations and individuals in this city and further afield and are proud of the support that we have received from trade union organisations in America.
Next Steps…
We are pleased to showcase some of the historical contributions that were made by ordinary people, that helped to establish Belfast as a world renowned industrial and maritime city. This new website will be of great benefit to help SHIP reach out to more people and we take this opportunity to thank the National Lottery Heritage Fund for their support in this venture.
